Title track from the upcoming release is killer!!!! Now this sounds like vintage Doobie Brothers, much more so than anything on Sibling Rivalry, while being properly updated. Bill Payne as always contributes great keyboard work, & the overall feel, groove & vocal sound is pure Doobies.
Interesting enough, the trademark “chunka-chunka” DB guitar sound is missing, & that’s not a complaint. I like the sound & feel of the guitars on this track. I also like how some of the instrumental passages have a touch of rhe Michael McDonald DB era. I’m groovin!!!!!

Tommy (Chuckles) and Patrick did it again, along with the other boys in this band. I wish you all well in Europe…
All the best from Iowa… we miss you all.

Will it get here in time for Hard Rock Tulsa ;<} would love to get my autographs in person on the 30th. This world has gone crazy, which is why we need this music to sooth our souls with their personal brand of Rock-N-Roll…..a good thing tracks do not wear out over the net, CU soon!

Gonna be a long post, as I’m writing while I listen.
“A Brighter Day”-Great!!! Possibly should have been the first single. It definitely needs some airplay. This song feels like a long awaited sequel to “Listen To The Music”. The reggae arrangement & feel propels the song nicely, & the almost gospel like chorus is superb!
“Chateau”-Tasty little rocker, much less stiff than the two attempts to rock out on Sibling Rivalry. The only trouble is the song never gets anywhere, especially lyrically. Killer groove, & I like it, but where’s the lyrical substance?
“Nobody”-As I stated in another post, I like this new version, it’s very well done, but I still feel a more imaginative change in the arrangement, (overall, not just in the beginning that was added on), would have been more interesting.
“World Gone Crazy”-Another I’ve commented on, & upon further listening, it just gets better. This is a great song.
“Far From Home”-Pat’s 1st song on the album, & it’s almost unbearably pretty. Vocal arrangement is stunning, John’s violin playing underscores the song perfectly, & the melody is just plain gorgeous.
“Young Man’s Game”-Love the honky tonk piano opening, & Tommy just comes in bragging, (in a good way), That good old funky, greasy Doobie Brothers sound in spades, with some nice tributes to Chuck Berry & some of the original rock & roll pioneers in both the arrangment & some of the very sly lyrics.
“Don’t Say Goodbye”-The collaboration with Michael McDonald is hypnotic, mixing in elements of the “McDonald era” of the band, with touches of harmonica & violin woven into the song. The rhythm part is very nice, never settling into any one feel, but tossing out little surprises here & there. This song has a lof of the feal of “Chinatown” & the title track from “Livin’ On The Fault Line”, & for me that’s a good thing! At the same time it feels fresh.
“My Baby”"-Background harmonies are the first thing I noticed, & I love them. Tommy’s lyrics are just great, & the easy, strolling rhythm of the song works in every way. Piano parts adds the right flourish to the song. Mellow groovin’!
“Old Juarez”-Interesting samba rhythm, almost with a Little Feat feel, & great opening guitar parts, leading into a very cool song, stylistically & structurally reminding me somewhat of one of my all time DB tunes, “South Of The Border”, but this song may be even better. Latin rhythms are far more prominent throughout, & the guitar solo is killer, a mix of the Doobies classic sound & Carlos Santana. This song is a winner!
I will be buying this album next week. Congratulations to the band, y’all did great in every respect with this new one!
“I Know We Won”-A poignant & nostalgic look back, in which Willie Nelson fits in perfectly, & while sounding a bit melancholy, it also sounds happy with how life turned out. Very nice little song.
“Law Dogs”-Nasty down home blues groove, with a real swampy sound. I love how it just simmers, giving off a dangerous vibe all the way.
Final thoughts: Tommy & Pat are in great voice on this album, both sounding committed in everything they sing. I love how this album is instantly identifiable as a DB album, without sounding like a slavish copy of the sound they’re known for. There is a lot of excellent playing throughout, & Teddy’s production is a welcome return, giveing each track a nice feel.
For nearly 20 years now, there have been 5 DB albums that to me were the pinnacle of their sound, the trio of “Toulouse Street”, “The Captain & Me” & “Vices”, the incredibly smooth “Fault Line” & the jamming “Brotherhood”. There is now a 6th album to add to that lofty height in “World Gone Crazy”. This is a great album, & more importantly it is a solid one, with every song being enjoyable & most being far richer than that.

I saw the Doobie Brothers at Hope Estate 26 March 2011. Fantastic performance that clearly demonstrated the immense professionalism of this band. With three+ great vocalists, three guitars that can hold their own individually as awesome lead players, add sax and viola all supported by a super tight rhythm. These guys really bought some great tunes to life. And so many good songs the crowd loved it. Dont know why the sound mix was so strongly flavoured with bass drum on this occasion though (and it wasnt just where I was sitting), that was the only downside.
I recommend seeing these guys if you get a chance!
