DOOBIES WORLD GONE CRAZY EXTENDS BROTHERHOOD
Guests Include Willie Nelson, Fmr. Doobie Michael McDonald & More
(WOODLAND HILLS, Calif.) The Sept. 28 HOR Records release of the Doobie Brothers’ World Gone Crazy pushes the band’s already expansive palette of sounds even further with the help of some very special guests. For a band whose diverse influences may only be exceeded by their long list of current and former collaborators, the added contributions make perfect sense.
Founders and principal songwriters Tom Johnston and Pat Simmons have anchored the band throughout the past 40 years, but didn’t hesitate to reach outside when merited. And what could be more meritorious than a co-write and duet with American icon Willie Nelson on “I Know We Won.” Simmons explains, “I’d been talking to Willie for ages. He’s a fantastic person and perfectly captured the sentiment.”
Elsewhere, Johnston enlisted world class musicians for several sessions, including accomplished piano master Billy Payne, percussionist Karl Perazzo (Santana), Doobie sax man Mark Russo, Tower of Power horn legend Mic Gillette and A-list drummer Gregg Bissonette. “Billy is professor longhair twice removed and really the guy for the kind of stuff we wanted on the song ‘World Gone Crazy, ‘” Johnston says. “I was really going for that New Orleans feel. He also did a few other songs, bringing rich gospel sound to ‘A Brighter Day. ‘ We got a lot done in a three day period with all those guys. And that’s been the goal of all our records: To achieve that diversity but at the same time remain true to ourselves.”
For “Don’t Say Goodbye,” Simmons arranged for the inimitable vocal backing of former Doobie Michael McDonald. “He and I are still close friends,” Simmons says. “I got him, his wife Amy and a good friend of mine Gail Swanson to come in and sing background.”
World Gone Crazy has been in development for several years, enabling Simmons, Johnston, guitarist John McFee and drummer Mike Hossack to dial-in exactly what they wanted for the album. “We were able to reach out a little further, which in the past was not always the case,” Simmons says. “As you’re recording a song sometimes you realize it needs one or two other elements to make it come to life, and we had time for that. I had Cameron Stone come in and play cello on the track ‘Far From Home. ‘ It was a good feeling to be able to accomplish those things.”

Will be digging the new songs, [Album? CD? What the hell do you call it now?] when they come out. Now ,being a musician myself it’s always a joy to go to a Doobies show because I don’t have to worry about the sound being shitty. You’re FOH guy ALWAYS does an excellent job. As I’m getting a little older now,[Aren't we all?] I appreciate good sound. You guys always have it. Don’t get me wrong,I still like it LOUD but I like a little finesse these days too. Thanks for listening. You guys never let me down. Brent Madson

Just got back to Portland from your SW Washington Fair performance – you all MUST know this, but it was a fantastic show. It is so rewarding to hear Patrick and Tom back together, and the rest of the band is perfectly supportive of The Doobie Brothers’ sound. By the way, the sound was excellent – my only possible criticism is that the spot operators never focused on your bassist, who is a star unto himself (New Grass Revival – are you KIDDING??? Bloody Hell!!!). Have a great tour, and enjoy Europe.
All the best!

Great concert in Coquitlam BC again this year…but I really missed 2 things, Skylark and “South City Midnight Lady”
. Thought the sound was a bit “Boomier” than last year as well. The new tunes were good, but would really like to hear Dark Eyed Cajun Woman one year. I’ll go see you next year again if you guys come to Coquitlam.

Hi Pat – I’m Neal and Carolyn Cassady’s oldest daughter, and John Cassady’s sister. I am coming to see your performance on SEPT. 6TH IN IVINS, UTAH. Two Q’s: Can you play “Neal’s Fandango” for me (about my dad), and I wonder if my husband, George, and I could come back stage and present you with GREETINGS FROM THE CASSADYS. That would be a terrific birthday present!
Thx,
Cathy Cassady Sylvia

The Red Butte Concert in Salt Lake City is not on the T-shirt…why not? Will the shirts at the show have the date? This will be my 4th Doobies concert, starting in 1976 when Pablo Cruise opened (again in ’77, too!). Hoping to get backstage and get an autograph and a picture??? Thanks, Brian

VILLA MONTALVO CONCERT JUNE 4-6 2000
I need your help please, please, please….
I have been trying to find the name of your opening act during your concert at Villa Montalvo in Saratoga June 4-6 2000. I had bought their CD and YOUR CD and somehow lost theirs….lots of wonderful memories that weekend and would very much appreciate your help. I have “googled” and even called Villa Montalvo, but because it was so long ago, they do not have the records. They suggested I try this as my last resort.
THANK YOU IN ADVANCE FOR YOUR HELP – Jill

If the band reads these notes, I just want to say that your new association with HOR seems fantastic. They are doing all the right things to promote the band and the new album. Maybe it is just that with this release – in the age of the internet – I have a better seat to see what is going on? Well, I am such a big fan, I would just love it if this record just sells like hotcakes! Already ordered mine on Amazon … deluxe version, of course.

Well I have had the “World Gone Crazy” CD now for a day and all I can say is Thank You! The music is timeless Classic Doobies, the writing and messages are so relevant and true for today. I’m 51 and there is something special about holding the new “album” in your hands and looking at the art work; in this digital age that seems to be missing. So thanks for a great album and much continued success, I hope to see you again next year at Meijer Gardens which was the best show I have seen in Years!

Saw you at Sunset Station June 17th. What a show! You are better than ever. Love your CD and will get a chance to look at the DVD this weekend. Can’t wait. Do you remember — about 20 years ago — Camp Pendleton? They brought my daughter, her sister, a friend and myself backstage. We got to meet with you in your trailer. You let Kelley sing backup! You met with Kelley several months later before your performance at Milesquare Park in Fountain Valley. I got signals crossed & didn’t show. Had 7 msgs. that evening: “Mom, where are you? The Doobies & I are waiting for you!” Was I bummed! LOL! Kelley’s now on YouTube, has her own band, if you’re interested: on YouTube, type in No Limit live at OC Pavillion.

The sax solo in South City Midnight Lady for the XM radio live broadcast blows me away every time I hear it….especially since I used to play sax years ago. Was Marc Russo the sax player for this song?
Thanks for all you do. I’ve always been a Doobie Brothers fan and always will.
