The mastering work on “Nobody” is superb. Assuming that the rest of the project is as well done as this remake – then the world is in for the literal resurrection of the Doobie Brothers. If the industry will provide the air play … those of us who have followed and loved the band since it’s original configuration can rejoice as a new generation enjoys and assimilates the magical synergy we know as the Doobie Brothers. It’ll be hard to contain myself until the project is released in September. Looking forward to seeing you in Atlanta.

Aside from the slide work throughout the tune (nice touch), I’m mildly surprised that the band didn’t take a little more creative license with the song after all of these (too many) years. I found this rendition to be amazingly faithful to the original presentation right down to Tom J.’s resurrection of the guitar solo. Loved the recording quality (aren’t modern technology and techniques wonderful when in the right hands and not abused?) and the beefier background vocals as compared to those on the original track. Doobs are back(!!!); can’t wait till September when the album is released.

Hmmmm, as someone that, (when a member of the yahoo DB fan club), suggested that the band go back to one of their older songs & try a new approach to it, this version of “Nobody” is interesting. The opening instrumental intro does meander a bit, adding nothing to the song proper, though it is pleasant enough.
Once the song does actually begin, it’s a bit of a letdown to hear basically a note for note rendition of the original arrangement, (right down to the guitar solo!), first released in 1971. There is of course more instrumentation than the original version had, offering a few more musical flourishes & colorations here & there, just not that much more overall. Tommy seems in good voice, if sounding a bit detached in his singing in places. Background vocals & harmonies are nice, but again extremely similar to the original.
I’d give the new version a 6 on a scale of 0-10, as it is a nice interpretation of the song, even if the Doobies seem to be playing it safe by hewing too close to the original version & it doesn’t offer enough of a new look at the song for me. However, I can say that this one remake is itself far better than the entire album “Sibling Rivalry” was. so my hopes for the entire new album are very high!
A positive first impression of the upcoming release.

Wow, 40 years of Rockin’ Down That Highway….and let’s all be honest here on a few items -
- why the Doobs have not been inducted into the R&R Hall defines the word “travesty”…I challenge anyone to name another band that can cover so many genres of music (from country rock, to cajun, to bluegrass pickin to the hotest rock shows I’ve had the pleasure to witness (Red Rocks late 80′s and 90′s, smokin). They make the Eagles look average at this point and their harmonies and guitar mixes are more true today than the 70′s.
-The remixed “Nobody” was and will become a classic as it contains timeless riffs, solid beat and of course harmonies that blend wonderfully
- Can the Band or Fan Club resurrect a weekend of concerts and band hellos sometime in the near future?
I was fortunate enough to attend a long weekend in CA some 12-15 years ago at the Winery and it was one of the BEST experiences of my life. Where can I sign up?
So, I anticipate the release of this long overdue “album” and need to let the band know that my life would have been incomplete without the ability to “listen to your music” . I’ll even admit I lost my virginity to South City M. L., so thanks guys, you Rock more than you will ever know – my best, Steve in Boulder, CO

Oh yea, forgot to mention my kids, now 18 and 20 still have their guitar pics in their rooms and are still big fans, their first true R&R Show was the Doobs in Denver…front row and when that Harley cranked up and Tommy hit the first few notes of Rockin Down the Highway, I think their eyeballs came out of their heads, a priceless moment in my life as a dad…thxxx

Wow TJ and Patrick! this takes me right back to the basement on 12th street eatin’ my granola and yogurt outta half a cantaloupe just watchin and listen’ while you guys created music all day. It’s so awesome to hear this one again. I agree with others, it sorta got overshadowed once you guys made it big with Listen to the Music. I’ll never forget when y’all returned with your first album release and we placed our stereos out the windows throughout the neighborhood. Janeen did a count-down and we dropped the needles on the albums then danced in the street. I’m feelin’ it all over again and it makes me so happy that you still have the sound, rhythm and drive. I love you guys. Always will!

I am responding to Mark’s earlier comments and that of several others about their mild disappointment to the lack of difference between the new version of Nobody and the orignal 1970 recording.
Firstly, there is no doubt that the artists have retained most of the elements of the orignal performance, and now added a few nuances. Perhaps the reasoning for this is explained in the AOL interview Tom gave about this song, where he explains that Ted Templeman was never satisfied with the orignal recording, and perhaps the new album gave him the opportinuity to take care of some unfinished business. See http://www.aolradioblog.com/2010/07/06/the-doobie-brothers-nobody-new-song/
Picking up on this same point, I have read past critical reviews of the original album commenting on the poor recording production standards. I am not an expert in production recording acoustics so I’ll accept ths verdict. However, I have always found this album has a certain charm due to its “rawness”. I guess this is to be expected as this was the group’s first recording attempt as an ensemble.
Oh yes, I don’t agree entirely with Mark’s comments about Sibling Rivalry. Yes there are some weak tracks, but there are also some very strong performances that never got the airplay they deserved. How can you not turn up the volume on “Rockin’ Horse”, it’s infectious music.
Lastly, the new release of Nobody has perhaps brought about a rivival to critically revisit the Doobie’s earlier work. There are some great tracks on this album which never got the recognition I think they deserved. My personal favourite is Pat’s haunting rendition of “Closer Every Day”.

On songoku’s comments regarding the original version of “Nobody” & the Doobie’s first album; yeah, in the mixing of it, somebody at Warner Brothers really dropped the ball, as the entire album has a murky & muddy sound to it, both on vinyl & digitally, so it has to be in the original mix, or less likely in the mastering. Listening to the single edit of “Nobody” originally released in 1974, & remixed at that time, (available on the “LTR” box set), is a revelation. The sound is much clearer, (the bass being especially prominent in the mix), & the song jumps out of the speakers. I agree that the botched mixing job on the original album is a part of why it tanked sales wise, though the fact that Lenny Waronker pushed for more of an acoustic sound, (against the band’s wishes according to the liner notes in the box set), coupled with Tommy not quite having the knack/formula for dashing off the breezy hits that he soon mastered didn’t help sales either. Don’t get me wrong, I love the first album & agree that there’s a lot of unheard great music on it, but it does pale in compariosn musically to what soon followed by the band. “Toulouse Street” is light years ahead of the first album in every respect, & things only improved from there.
As to “Sibling Rivalry”, I had to go back & check what song “Rocking Horse” was, it’s been so long since I’ve listened to the album. For me overall, out of 13 songs on the album, there were 4 I’d rank as average to very good for the Doobies & their sound, & 9 songs that were mediocre at best, “Rocking Horse” being 1 of those 9. It, like “45th Floor” is 1 of the 2 rockers on the album, & both sound fairly stiff to me, without the easy swing & fluid groove of songs like “China Grove”, “Without You”, “Down In The Track”, “South Of The Border”, “Long Train Running” etc.
I personally find much of “Sibling Rivalry” uninspired & uninspiring, though my feelings for it have softened a bit with time. Those 4 songs I referred to I can listen to, as for the rest, well 3 of those I can tolerate occasionally, (including “Rocking Horse”), & the other 6 will never make any playlist of mine.

Mark and songoku. Log onto Wolfgangs Vault, a.k.a. Concert Vault and check out the 1971 Filmore West Doobies concert. Nobody has an instrumental intro that has a similar feel and sound to the new recording, at least to me. It gives me an idea about where the band was coming from and where they wanted to go with the updated Nobody. We know the Doobies like to take studio versions and do interesting things to them for live performances. They kind of close the loop here, maybe taking Nobody full circle with a studio version that reflects the early live version. By the way, this 1971 live recording is fascinating! Check out the earliest Long Train Runnin. Pre Captain and Me. Enjoy!

Dave, oddly enough when I was writing my comments, especially the second one, I was going to mention that very cobcert & forgot to! It’s been a while since I listened to it, so I’ll have to go back & compare the two versions. You’re right that this is a fascinating document of the band live at a very early period.

Thanks Dave, Mark for bringing this to my attention. I have listened to this concert before and like Mark I will revisit it again. This is the earliest recorded public performance that I am aware of. (Not sure if this was on the tail end of their Mothers and Brothers tour). It is fasincating to listen to their early performance (unfortunately this concert does not appear to have been recorded in full), nonetheless, you can definitely hear some of the beginnings of the doobie’s sound; those trade mark riffs and licks that would propel the group to greater things in the years to come. I believe the group was in the process of recording Toulouse Street around the same time as this concert, and then followed the personnel changes with Dave Shogren departing and Mike Hossack and Tiran Porter comming on board to complete the new lineup and the remainder of the Touslouse Street albumn.

I like the update. Adding dobro was a nice touch and I think the instruments sound more polished. I always like this song and thought it didn’t get it’s due. So with that, I’m really hoping I can dredge up some tix for the Salt Lake show. Somehow I managed to be asleep at the switch when they went on sale and now it’s a sell-out. It’s a great venue, too – Red Butte Gardens above the Univ. of Utah; one the Doobs have never played here. Can’t wait for that show and can’t wait for 9/28.

Mark the critic. I understand your comments about Nobody, but I think you are way off on Sibling Rivalry. I think there are some real gems on that album with some amazing lyrics, especially songs that highlighted Keith and John. Don’t Be Afraid is a great song and I was lucky enough to hear it live in Stamford CT at the Palace Theater, along with Rocking Horse. Sibling Rivalry is one of those CDs that you leave in your car and just play over and over as it gets you into a dreamy state (at least it got me into one). Everyone is entitled to an opinion so don’t take this as criticism, but I am sure that all of us can find technical issues with most songs. The true test for me is whether the song continues after it ends, that is, does the sound evoke a change of mind set and set you free. For me, that is the essence of this band, an irrevocable, continuous journey of soothing sound that raises my pulse while it quiets my mind. Peace to all.

MY FAVORITE BAND ALWAYS – love you all so very much. My own band is a classic rock medley band and we have two medleys of the Doobie Bros. I just wish I could see you again! When you come to Grand Rapids, Michigan, the only place you play is Fredrick Meijer Gardens, and all the people who have memberships there ALWAYS buy all the tickets before they go on sale to the public -so there really is no selling to the public- so sad to miss you every time. PLEASE book at the Van Andel, or come to my house and do a concert
My own kids love you too! I have to tell you that there are times I NEED to hear a Doobie song so badly, when I am down, having a hard time, I am always made to feel so much better when I hear you – thank you so much – Laurie (Elle)
