Happy Holidays from the Doobies!

13 November, 2007 (19:40) | News

Bruce Cohn and Doobie Brother Pat Simmons receiving award2007 has been a great year for us. We performed over 80 concerts, co-headlining with Lynyrd Skynyrd, Steve Miller and Peter Frampton. This was fun for all involved. We are also planning some co-headlining tours for the summer of 2008 with some great artists, and will be announcing those dates in the near future.

Our annual Benefit Concert for the National Veterans Foundation at BR Cohn Winery was a blast! We were honored to perform with Huey Lewis and the News, Tower of Power, Lydia Pense & Cold Blood, Three Dog Night, Los Lobos, Canned Heat, Taj Mahal, and Civil Twilight (with The Lara Johnston Band and Pat Simmons, Junior opening the show.) Check out the cool photo gallery on the BR Cohn website.

As the Band finishes up the last few shows of the year, we are beginning to look at songwriting and recording a new album for everyone’s enjoyment! Also, Pat Simmons and Bruce Cohn are working on a DVD retrospective project of the band’s wild and crazy history from 1970 to the present. Watch this space for more news on those items soon!

Great news for 2008. A couple grammatical corrections. First word, second paragraph should be “Our” not “On.” Also, in the Tour dates area, the Las Vegas street is Fremont, not Freemont. Sorry, I’m an English teacher and notice these things.

I was fortunate to see the Doobies play with Lynyrd Skynyrd in Hartford CT this past summer. What a show!! I had not seen the Dobbies since the 1990′s and played most of my favorites and sounded excellent. Can’t wait to see you guys again.

Gratefully,

Thanks for the great show at Little Creek Casino this past Friday. What a great way to end the year. Other of my family made the WSU/Pullman show and said you brought down the house! We look forward to any new music and photo documentary of the bands development. Stay healthy and the very best to all the band members in 2008!

Kat and I got to see two shows this year, one, a great ride to Jacksonville, Or., with 9 bikes and 14 people in July. And, at the end of Sept, the Sat. show at the winery, which was my anniversary present to Kat. A great time at both show, great people, great music. Thanks, Doobie Brothers and all else involved.

My wife and I went with our daughter to the Pullman concert last weekend. You helped us remember what it was like to have so much fun together again! Funny how you guys come to life and move the crowd to their feet. It was like we didn’t even realize what was happening before we found ourselves clapping to your music and dancing in front of our seats. Please have another concert close enough for us to attend again. My youngest daughter sported the “concert-T” and bandana to school the folowing Monday. She’s a Freshman in High school and closes the rock and roll gap in our family. It was nice to see that next time, we can take her to your concert without a care in the world. It was the best “Dad’s Weekend” ever! So.. thank you Doobie Brothers, my friends! – Kevin

Hey guys.

Feeling nostalgic, I just rented the disc from the TV series “What’s Happening” that featured the band on a two-part episode. Haven’t seen it since I was a kid. What great memories! Pat, you and the guys did a great job. What fun! I’m wondering what you remember about filming that episode, and if there are any stories you could share with us about the experience.

Needless to say, I’ve been a big fan since before then, and I’m still one – having bought every recording you guys have made.

Lastly, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to each of you and those you love. Thanks for all the years of great music you continue to share with us.

God bless,
Mark

The B.R. Cohn charity concert this year was amazing! The bands were great – I really like Tower of Power. It’s funny, I thought that Tower of Power was just the back up horn section for Huey Lewis (I was in high school in the mid 80s…) I was obviously wrong. And to hear that they’ve been around for 40 years. Ooops. My bad. I ran out and bought a few albums of theirs.

Anyway, the band was really cool to let folks sit on the hay bales at the edge of the stage (I was one of them). The sound was great, the day was great, and I even got to take my “McFee 4 Prez” sign to the concert. :-) I’m really looking forward to the DVD – can I sign up for it now?

I was a limo driver in the early 80′s and believe me I drove many bands in my college years. Rufus and chaka Heat Wave, Rolling Stones and a few more; but of all the bands I drove and admired, especially the Doobie Brothers. If most everyone could see them behind the doors, believe me they are like your next door neighbors!!! They had a D-3 at Greensboro NC. airport and I carried the luggage into the plane and so “help me” is was just like an apartment flying on wheels……. but mike, you ask me to DRIVE you to West Wa. instead of flying. Now i’m cripple , and any day you need a ride we’ll get get in the car and ROLL. Mitch Dean 665 Saplin Branch rd. Timberlake n.c. 27583 Happy Holidays

After a really busy year with plenty of events, just wondering what the band has been up to as the Holidays roll in. Hopefully some restful downtime and reflection. Maybe even some new releases from what I hear on the web. Of the many fan clubs around the DB one seems to have a common theme – everyone wants “more” of the band. It must be good to know all the years and work have resulted in a good thing getting even better!
Hope to see the group again, maybe someday at Smitty’s! Kind regards from Bay Area Bob.

I had the pleasure of meeting each of the Doobie Brothers at Casino Rama in 2003. I had my picture taken with each one of the guys and it was a thrill to meet both Pat and Tom as I am big fans of their writing. It was refreshing to meet a group of guys that play in one of the most recognized bands in the world and talk to you like they you are one of the boys and really show their appreciation for you attending their concerts. I have always been a Doobie Brothers fan and I always will. It was truly a pleasure to meet you guys!!! Keep on Rocking Down the Highway!!!!

Sorry about this being so late, but your concert at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, IA last spring was fantastic! Mark G. came all the way from Fargo and we camped out on the edge of the stage right in front of John as soon as we got through the doors! Please come back to the Surf (the place should be the “Rock and Roll Hall of Fame”) in 2008. Thanks for all the great times! TK

I’ve known Tom Johnston since jr hi in lil ole Visalia, Ca. Believe me folks he was far ahead of his time musicially in his later years of Hi School. Plus Tom is a genuine down to earth guy who doesn’t forget where he comes from. He’s always accomadating to old friends he grew up with and its a pure pleasure watching these guys devolp from the very early 70′s in San Jose, from then they skyrocketed into the big time. They should have already been inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame, too me they’ve aged like a fine wine still today! One of the Bet Bands Ever!! Hi Doobies. I was just talking to Mark G. from Fargo about the Vegas New Years Eve show. Mark and I were the guys who caught you at the Surf Ballroom (Clear Lake, IA) last summer. Apparently Mark made a reference, in his Vegas comment, to a steam calliope and getting John to play it when you guys are in New Orleans for Mardi Gras. I am the trumplet player with that steam calliope. We’ve been coming down from Minnesota for the last thirteen years and roll in the parades every year with our 90 year old, coal-fired, steam calliope and our Dixieland band. We will be staging at City Park with the rest of the floats about three hours before Endymion rolls on Saturday afternoon, 2/2/08. We will have a live sound system, ampped and miced, along with a drum kit, if Tommy, Pat, Big Mike, Skylark and the rest of the gang want to jam to some live “funky Dixieland” for a bit! Call me at 507-429-8519. (My e-mail address might not work.) We’d have a great time!

I have seen your group several times in the Kansas City area. I was wondering when you are coming back to the Kansas City/ Kansas area? I am a fan from long ago-I love Black Water. Many others have listened to you and gone on to make their own music. You guys are the best. I just saw the video for Black Water and the people in the audience all kept sitting down. It was funny, now no one sits. Love ya Dobbie’s lots.

Saw the Doobies at the Endymion Extravaganza (Mardi Gras) in the Superdome during the early hours of Sunday morning, Feb. 3 (about 2-2:45 a.m.) They were absolutely brilliant and having been a fan since my teens in the late ’70s, these guys “still got it!” Of course, Pat Simmons’ “Black Water” was extra special since it’s his homage to New Orleans, but all the songs were equally enjoyable. Love the guy on keyboards, too!
Tom, you looked great, by the way! Keep on rockin’, guys, and thanks for the party! Please don’t be strangers and come back to New Orleans real soon!

I’ve been thinking back to the time I first heard/met the band in NOLA in 1971. I fixed the stage power at Audabon Park (which the park manager had turned off) then went to their loft for rehearsals. I volunteered to post handbills, carry equipment and appreciated the groups’ talent, comeraderie and professionalism greatly. My connection was through a nice lady named Stephanie who rode her own motorbike to NOLA from WA state. I think she was Pat Simmons lady then; not sure. Actually not sure about much so long ago; but if I can add anything to the DVD retrospective project I can testify that it was not only “wild and crazy.” These guys were “talented and disciplined” – and that is why they made history! I spent weeks promoting that large club gig (somewhere near where Jaks Brew) that the record company was coming to see, Being only 17 years old, I could not come into the club to listen though. I hun outside with a hundred other people who could not get inside it was so packed. I left NOLA a couple days after the new record company turned their thumbs up for the band – I went seeking to learn about the Beattles Way with Words Multi-Media Project. I was so delighted to hear them in the mainstream the following year. I’m looking for the NOLA underground newspaper from that same time that had a front-page picture of me in Jackson Square perched atop the statue of Andrew Jackson’s horse with him. Fond memories!

I saw the Doobies several times back in the seventies when I was a teenager. You have always been one of my favorite groups! It was such a thrill to see you recently in Houston at the Verizon Wireless Theater. WOW! I couldn’t believe that it had been thirty years since I had seen you “live” in concert! The only thing that detracted from the concert was that Tom Johnston kept screaming defiantly at the crowd to cheer louder for the band. It wasn’t bad at first, but then he kept on doing it during every song until it got annoying! The look on his face was scary! I’m going to see the Doobie Brothers again (with Chicago) in June, and I hope that he doesn’t do the same thing…….Anyway, I always listen to “What Were Once Vices” and “Stampede” (also “Takin’ It To The Streets) and they are some of my favorite albums of all time!!! Go Doobies!

Each concert I have been to gets better. & I have met them. That was my dream concert when I did. Clinton, Iowa.
