Listen To The Martin
Anybody who listens to music that features acoustic guitar playing has heard lots of wonderful sounds coming out of a particular brand of guitar - Martin Guitars, that is. For well over a century and a half C.F. Martin, or Martin Guitar Company, has been producing fine acoustic guitars, and their instruments have been used by many, if not most, of the artists you’ve ever heard using acoustic guitars.
Well, now they’re unveiling a new Doobie Brothers Tom Johnston Signature model guitar at the January 2007 NAMM show in Los Angeles. Other “signature series” artists through the years would include such diverse names as Gene Autry, Buddy Guy, Eric Clapton, and Johnny Cash, to name a few.
This guitar - the one you see Tom holding in the accompanying photo - is a Doobie-42 Martin, Tom Johnston Model, and features an inlaid “Cycles” logo on the headstock, and “Doobies’ Choice” style “OK” hands on the tailpiece. Pretty darned niceā¦
Oh, yeah, and each guitar is actually signed by TJ himself, and they are being produced in lots of seven. This is obviously a truly unique and special instrument - congratulations to Tommy and to Martin Guitars on this very, very cool guitar.

Tom Johnston (AND Patrick Simmons!!!) taught me how to play acoustic git-fiddle WAAA-AAY back in da early 70’s while I was ensconced in the Army at Fort Hood Tex. and Germany….Iffen it were’nt for my stack of Doobie records (Das’ RIGHT, Digital Doctors…VINYL!!!…not 0’s n’ 1’s…remember!…”Vinyl sounds Finyl”) and OCCASIONAL doobie, I’d have gone crazy!….I wanna thank Tom n’ Pat for their writing style n’ songs that I still love and play today…I believe their music to be timeless and vital, especially even now, when it seems that everyone else has writers, directors, producers, engineers, and all manner of bric-a-brac and sonic toys that can only emulate…NEVER duplicate…the creativity and fantasy of God-given talent. Thanx, guys! Keep on Rockin’! (Uh, Pat?..Tom?….how do yall tune for Black Water???…drop “E” to “D”?…and do yall tune different for Clear as the Driven Snow?) daBear ![]()

I just recently saw the Doobies concert at the Horseshoe Casino in Shreveport, La. I have to say that I am totally in love with the band, always have been, and especially Tom Johnston. He is definitely HOT!! I am just a few years younger than him, but I have been a fan since they originated in the late 60’s early 70’s???? I even saw the band in San Francisco during my college years. TJ can damn sure play the guitar and he surely hasn’t changed much since the early years, in fact, he looks better to me now. Just wanted to let you know that I am a fan for life and I guess I’ll just have to fantasize the rest of my life about “Mr. Hottie”. Happy New Year and much love to you all. Keep on “Rockin’ Down the Highway”……….

What’s the price on the guitar? (or if I have to ask does that mean I can’t afford it?)
Martins have a sound all their own. Very nice instrument. Congratulations Tom, a very nice
tribute and in with some praiseworthy fellow musicians.

Hey Tom!!! Haven’t seen you since KC in ‘01. How have you been? It is amazing how talented Lara is. It must be the Johnston gift. Somehow is passed over me. I spoke with Uncle Doug and he said this would be the best way to get a hold of you. I missed you two years ago in Washington due to company travel. I noticed that you are going to be in Maryland Heights on the 22nd and I would like to see you.
I really would like to try to get all the Johnston offspring toghether again. The last time I can even remember when we were all together was in ‘72 (I think). I included my email so we can exchange info. Anyway, I look forward to hearing from you….Brett
